A small dining room doesn't have to feel like a compromise. With the right pieces and a clear-eyed approach, you can create a dining space that feels considered, welcoming and entirely intentional.
The table is everything. An extendable table is the small-space workhorse: it seats two daily but opens to seat six or eight when you need it. Look for ones with hidden butterfly leaves that store within the table itself.
Don't be afraid of round tables. Round tables are friendlier in small rooms — no sharp corners to navigate, and everyone feels equal distance from each other. A 90cm round table is remarkably comfortable for four.
Seating that doubles as storage is a smart investment. Upholstered benches with lift-up lids can store linens, serving pieces and anything else you need off the floor. They also seat more people per linear metre than individual chairs.
For very tight spaces, consider wall-mounted fold-down tables — popular in European apartments for decades, and finally finding their place in beautifully designed homes. Paired with stackable chairs, they disappear entirely when not in use.
