How to Style a Neutral Living Room That Never Feels Bland
5 min read
A neutral palette doesn't have to mean boring. The secret is layering — different textures, tones and materials that read as neutral but add depth when you look closer.
Start with your largest piece: the sofa. Opt for a natural linen or cotton in ivory, stone or oatmeal. These shades are forgiving, age beautifully and work with virtually any accent colour you add later.
Next, layer in texture. A chunky wool throw, a jute rug, a linen cushion in a slightly warmer tone — each adds visual interest without colour chaos. Vary the pile height and weave on your rug for extra dimension.
Greenery is your best friend in a neutral room. A fiddle-leaf fig in a terracotta pot, a trailing pothos in a concrete planter, or even a small arrangement of dried grasses all add life without disrupting the palette.
Finally, edit ruthlessly. Neutral rooms succeed when they're not overcrowded. Choose fewer, better pieces, and leave space for the room to breathe.
